Love’n Snow Days

This is my love… -15 degrees under the blue sky and sunshine. Carving through 5o cm’s of fresh white powder and face-shot laden smiles with best friends.    

 

Rewind to Ceramics

Clay Body, Kiln, Kneading, Wedging, Pug… The ceramics studio… Greenware : Unfired objects Leather-hard : A clay body that has been dried partially Biscuit : Refers to the clay after the object is shaped to the desired form and fired in the kiln for the first time known as “biscuit fired”. this firing changes the clay body in several ways. Mineral components of the clay body will undergo chemical changes that will change the colour of the clay. Glaze, Bone-dry, Plasticity…the list goes on…the word I used the most in the ceramic studio was ‘Wow’…I had some talented friends. I spent 2 years in the ceramic studios at Emily Carr and loved every moment. As I reflect I still feel the sense of community and warmth that clay brings to the studio. As I post images of my work created in those studios, I can remember the process very well. The amount of time clay demands!  Time spent kneading, rolling, bending, shaping, drying, firing, making glaze, glazing,firing…and in between each of these stages was conversation, support and sharing. Sharing food, ideas,kilns, tools and laughs. You DO need a sense of humour for those kiln openings! Ah,the opening of the kiln after a glaze fire! the heartbreak and defeat of a failed firing, and getting to really know my peers.There were some great moments.  I have lost touch with some of the most talented friends I made in that ceramic studio. 3 of which are in these photos and fellow curators of this show titled CRAM.We built a 60ft trough, filled it with ‘Slip’ and submerge our bodies ( 12 of us) into the clay as a performance piece and a great addition to the show…It was an experience and really a metaphor of our ‘submergence’ into our  area of study…we became the clay-bodies.  I love multiples, I love community and I loved the warmth.
